Where’s the Wifi? – News and Reviews Episode 2

Quick Settings? More like “Have Fun Hacking This Menu Back to Normal” Settings!

Android 12 comes with a slew of UI changes. One of them is the new Internet Quick Settings Tile. It looks like Google was shooting for irony because there’s nothing “quick” about it. For more on this, check out the video at the bottom of the page.

The new tile replaces the older WiFi and Data Tiles and allows users to toggle the internet connection on their device. You can access it using the steps below:

  • Pull down the notification bar
  • Click Internet Tile to display a submenu with both mobile data and WiFi toggles. You can now enable/disable both connections as desired

It works the same as before, but there’s an extra step to accessing these settings. Veteran users will be annoyed having to open a second menu to toggle connections when they already had their respective Tiles before.

This is also strange because the remaining Tiles are still available. Bluetooth, Auto-Rotate, etc. The rest of them are still available and toggle their respective settings at the push of a button. No extra submenus.

Were they trying to save space in the UI? Well, Android 12 still allows users to rearrange Tiles in the Notification Area so ergonomy is ruled out.

I have no idea why they added this…”feature”. I checked the Android 12 changelog on the Android website, but they didn’t list anything about this change in the UI.

Thankfully, there are a plethora of tutorials out there for reverting the Quick Settings menu back to normal.

Google can fix all of this with an update that returns the Quick Settings back to its original form. Between this article and the many folks who devoted time to creating instructions on how to fix this “feature”, it’s clear Google made a mistake.

The experiment is over, Google. You really want to improve Android 12? Start with separating the Internet tile into it’s original two: Wi-Fi and Mobile Data.
