Five Things to Avoid When Socializing Online – Road…

  • by Richard Clarke

Now that you know some ways to network online, here are some traps to avoid.

It’s great to talk to new people online. But sometimes, discussions can get heated and people’s feelings get hurt. By avoiding these pitfalls, you can enjoy your time online and meet some great folks along the way.

For more on this, watch the video at the bottom of the page.

1. Don’t badmouth your boss

This one is a bit more obvious. The last thing you want is to walk in to work and get fired for what you said about the company online. People see what you talk about online so keep the commentary between you and your friends in real life.

2. Tell people what to post

Show respect for people out there. Whether you agree with the content or not, making content isn’t easy. Even if they outsource parts of it, a lot of work goes into the process. Putting down the creators isn’t going to help build a network. If you don’t enjoy their content, you can move on to something else.

3. Talk about politics

Ditch the political commentary. Seriously, make a separate account to talk about that stuff. Talking about your political leanings can push others away. This makes it harder for you to network. You want to focus on making connections with other focused developers. Save the red and blue for family dinner.

4. Fight with people online.

Don’t reply! In this day and age, it’s easy to find things to get upset over. You’re bound to find something eventually. Remember, you’re here to meet like-minded folks in your field.

I’ve had a few disagreements with people online. But because of these guidelines, I know my online activity is solely focused on tools for Android development. Since I have a way to deal with personal attacks online, I stay out of drama.

5. Join OTHER online arguments. See previous step

If it’s crude content or aimed at insulting others, leave it alone. Or even block the person. Look for the people in your field focused on sharing ideas.

We’re here to make allies and help each other out. There will be many tweets, posts, and users online. But only ONE of YOU.

With these steps, you can protect your online network. Stay focused and meet some fellow devs!
