Social media can be a great tool for networking. If you do it right.

For more on this, watch the video at the bottom of the page.

The more I use social media, the easier it is to network with like-minded developers. I wanted to go over some tips for joining communities online. In other words, some “Do’s” of socializing online.

1. Find online communities or meetups for developers.

Find people within your niche. They’re already doing what you’re interested in. They can show you the best way to move your career forward. Also, find devs outside your niche!

Even a community outside your area can help. Talking to developers from different backgrounds can give you perspective on your niche. Maybe help spark ideas for new projects.

2. Follow your favorite app’s developers!

Think about an app you use a lot. Find the developer in the Play Store and follow them online. You can keep up with any upcoming changes to the app. Also, learn how companies talk to their user base.

3. Do the same for a game you play!

When I found out you could play Doom with a bunch of toasters, I was blown away! Fun projects like these can help you come up with exciting ideas. Remember, you can make goofy projects too. It doesn’t have to be the next Uber or Facebook. But the first toaster fps? Now you’re cooking.

4. Bookmark the XDA Developer website

XDA Usually feature articles on interesting android projects and features. In fact, this is where I learned to root one of my old testing phones. Even if you’re brand new, you can join the conversations. See what people are talking about!

5. When you find good content, give some feedback

It’s tough when your feed is so packed with content. Take a second to let them know your thoughts. It’ll help them make better content. Maybe they were too far from the mic or too close. Help content creators help you. Who knows, you might get featured on someone’s channel/website. Now you’re helping others too!

These are some tips for building a strong network online. Get out there and start today! For more on this, watch the YouTube video below.
