How Fortnite Keeps Good Times in Rotation

Fortnite has found the key to a perfect online experience. And they know how to keep players hooked in!

Fortnite has become my second favorite game of 2018 (behind Risk of Rain). The multiplayer experience is the best I’ve ever had. Not because of the game’s core mechanics, but the matchmaking speed.

Fortnite can switch from a slow paced sandbox to fast paced gunplay in an instant. One second you’re mining resources, the next you’re getting holes in your shirt from an unknown assailant. As a newbie in the online gaming community, this is 90% of my experience. So what is it that draws me back in? What is it that kept me on my PS4 for 4 hours of my Snow Day today?

Matckmaking. Fortnite matchmaking is so fast, you can easily join another game at any time. I can be roaming the map, get shot, and withing 60 seconds be right back in another game. I tried checking my social media between matches, but after game four I put in all my focus.

The ability to jump back into another game keeps the game fresh and allows even the least experienced players an opportunity to learn the game without skipping a beat. I’ve played other online games since getting my PS4, but Fortnite is the first to feature such a smooth learning experience for hours on end. If the development teams at People Can Fly and Epic maintain this level of functionality, I’ll definitely be playing this game for years to come.
