Re: Software Installations and the Lack Thereof (Part 2)

When we last saw our codingFanatic, he discovered that Android Studio was available on Linux as well. Let’s see what happened to him next…

I returned to the Android Studio website. Frustrated, I decided to scroll around looking for information to take my mind off of my earlier installation issues.

It made sense at the time…

I scrolled down and saw underneath the download link for an option to select different platforms. Sure enough, Linux was right there! YES!

But after spending an entire evening/morning on a failing install, I chose to surf the web for alternative installation instructions. A few something searches later, I came across documentation specific to Linux-users including terminal command lines to install the software.

The holy grail…I finally did it!

I promptly closed the Windows 7 Virtual Machine and opened the terminal. It took about 15 minutes from when I opened my terminal window to when I had Android Studio up and running on Linux.

It would have been faster, but I took a bathroom break. Still, 15 minutes vs an entire day? That’s not bad at all…

I sat down comfortably in my seat, opened Android Studio, and went to start a new project. Only to find out, once again, I needed Java JDK 1.8. I had JDK 1.7…

Enough! Let’s recap…

I had a goal of developing Android apps. I found the resource necessary for reaching my goal. Along the way, I had to configure it to run properly before using it.

I guarantee you will experience this on your path. Especially dealing with unfamiliar software. Programming in your favorite language is great and all, but once you couple that with an understanding of managing software, you’ll reach greater heights.

Top floor swimming pool with a diving board that shoots you up into another swimming pool. From a soiree to an extravaganza!

Keep your mind open to this while you work on your projects. It will help you develop a deeper understanding that others spend countless nights looking for.

If you’re gonna write programs telling a device what to do, better make sure you understand how the device gets it done
